hey you guys it was a great time, thanks to nathan johnson for getting all of this together, philip vanderleest para el speakers (look at him up there lookin great like a real DJ), GTR Pro for the tubes, all of my good tube friends for helping with the formations (y'all were great), and the library for being very open minded about all of this. the people there were awesome, no, YALL WERE AMAZING. it was super scary having my mix up there for 10 minutes and I had NO control over it.

every now and then i'll get the question and insta-retort "why do you guys do something like once a month instead of every week? people would be more likely to come once a month" it's a question that grows wearying, but i must admit is fair seeing as it has been demonstrably true. the easy answer has always been to simply say that "our only real option where we aren't under the sway of the schedules of sororities and fraternities" which we are very truly subject to in a once a month schedule. given that there is the very real possibility that we can be pre-empted by the awkward and white, we might as well go for boogie bytes 4 out of 5 thursdays a month instead of maybe once.

but the reason deep down why boogie bytes exists and why lazy pixel existed before it is not to necessarily give people a party or a reason to go nuts, its to give them a regular option to do so. that may seem to be two of the same thing contradicting each other, but if you want to really reach out to people, you have to meet them halfway and this can in fact mean on their schedule. plus if you want to give people who will support the music and the scene already, why not give them a reliable, regular alternative instead of a rare party then having us all go back into our holes? this gives us a unique opportunity because this simply does not exist other places in starkville (and if you say dave's i will politely beg to differ.) and we're just glad to have been given the chance.

that being said, we've received a really fantastic response from people, who have come out and invited their friends to create a perpetually growing group of people and excitement. i'm continually surprised at how we add members and really excited to see where we can go over the next few months.

films aren't what i usually talk about on the blog. i mean, i'm not a critic about everything. following the life of a writer, danny (played by noah taylor) as he bounces around shared houses in australia under a constantly changing identity, trying to keep the police one step behind him as they engage him in their mundane chase. also following him is a cast of core characters, namely a german pagan lesbian with a taste for chaos, a love interest with all-the-wrong interest in stability, and a heroin junkie named flip, as well as the absurdity that follows when these folks and the law intersect.

this film is extremely well balanced. its sense of absurdity anchored in a cast of characters who exist in our realm of people. it moments of sadness ended with moments of endearing human decency. the writing in this film is another source of balance, masking its depression with riotously funny dialog. also the directing in this film, handled by richard lowenstein, there is a special importance to the houses where he lives and who he ends up living with.

museum mouth has a very special place in my heart. it contains three of my very best friends, karl savannah and graham. they've been together for less than a year now but man are they promise central. singing pop punk songs with, i must say pretty unique lyrics, they keep it simple, fast and full of genuine emotion. you may recognize the guy on the far left (not the cats) from a way earlier post about k. kuehn. but here its clear that sav is the lead singer, lending a sweeter and ultimately catchier tunes!

if you ever get an opportunity to see the documentary, danielson: a family movie, please do. if not for yourself, for your family. no slight against my own family or anyone elses, but i've never seen a group so devoted to each other. and its completely genuine; they invest themselves into the dreams of each other, dressing up in nurses outfits and singing songs that your average person wouldn't even bother to take seriously.

but there is a very serious message here. the man behind it all, daniel smith, fell in love with the idea of the bible salesman that he doned a simple suit, and sold (or a least) the ideals of christianity to a public that was mostly just amused at him and the spectacle, that included selling items such as hand crafted heart shaped blinders. all of this is just a part of the vision that he says God shared with him. its a really wonderful vision.

our second boogie bytes is tonight. come say hello!

alright, now its time to enter vitas. it's going to be hard to pick just a few videos because they are all so good, but i think its only prudent that i start off with the first video, introduced to me by the born ruffians blog. check out his facial expressions, the crowd reactions, and his amazing, not at all gimmicky chorus.

next up is probably my favorite, it sounds like the fifth element song with a BLBLBLBL thrown in for good measure. notice the bicycle disco dancer get up that is simply too too much.

now check the melodrama littered in this one. the snow, the funeral suit, the intense facial expressions. oh lordy!oh yes, watch from 1:55 on for some silly faces and spins

next to finally is an offering that seems oddly hispanic to me. the emphasis on family. the constantly slow motion. the pointless narrative (if you can all it that). at 3:12 he flies! he flies, for no reason! no reason at all!

finally is the music video for the performance above. it has all the facial overdoing it but without an audience, and the addition of the contemplation of suicide. the second time the chorus come in (about 1:50 he shakes a violin.)

miike snow (with the e pronounced, and the second i as well) has been tearing things up lately. the singer and two producer group out of sweden make cool, synth-y-horn-y jams. i also want everyone to know that they use drums very well. the mark ronson (he's one of my favorite producers btw, and brother of samantha ronson, lindsay lohan's lesbian lady) remix throws a low fi veneer on it and makes us clamour for a lily allen vocal to join in, but you're always satisfied, it also does some good stuff to vocals, very very poppy. the vampire weekend song up is a wonderful glitchy, the kind you can't tell is glitchy. don't question just enjoy.

you guys may not know it yet, but you really seem to looooove fake blood. everytime they get played, you guys start moving and sweating, and it becomes a real fun time. the first time i was introduced to fake blood, the hooded deer blasted out the dave nada remix of their classic mars, i and everyone else was in awe of the hard synth and drum line mixed with the hip hop hook OOOOOOOOOWWWWEEEEEEE, y'all. this newer track from them off the fix your accent EP is in my opinion a very good, disco dancy addition to their smooth repertoire, it almost feels as if d.a.n.c.e. and daft punks "crescendolls" came together and had a child. its awesome. links below!

so it ended up being a bit longer than a few days, i understand that, but we've been busy and we're back now so whats the difference? so what have we been up to? WELL I'LL TELL YOU!

first up was:

man was this a wicked fun homecoming. coming off an 11 hour drive i wasn't sure how i'd feel, but it felt great gettin all the hugs from people i hadn't seen in frankly too damn long. but somewhere amongst all the meetings i had to deej with blaine and that i did.

of course in typical pyroglyphics fashion, we just had to screw something up. this time we did it by ending a WHOLE HOUR EARLY. not very punk rock we know, but there was so much confusion and we ended the confusion, and everything else. yes, it was a real good time filled with much heat and much learning, but it was just the beginning. next up was the granddaddy of the year so far: 20,000 beats under the sea!

this gig was supposed to feature the group cockfight club, but by a case of addition through subtraction (well, "by means of" might be a better word than "through") we were able to add elektrogeezus to the ticket. we already had matthew ess out of memphis on the ticket, so needless to say, it was fiyahhhh. a real highlight of the night IMO (damn right i got opinions, its a blog!) was when he played this remix of the MGMT classic:

i think i'll start with the whole history of dev hynez's music career. it all started with what might be the only hardcore band i ever really liked. it was an absurd mix of smart musical construction, hilarity, and SHARKS! yes, it was three guys going balls out and promising never to return.

you know this guy, he went vroom vroom in speed racer, was a nice young'n in Milk, fell in love with a girl next door, and had a dangerous life as an altar boy; any guessers? you prolly got it right, its emile hirsch! and he's got this new project out called emil & friends. its not too groundbreaking (no songs of his own) but he does do some pretty sweet remixes and covers. i especially like these two, they're fun, and in my opinion pretty daring. its not everyday you hear someone completely re-imagine how a michael jackson could sound, or take one of the bigger singles of the year and turn it into this odd but refreshing mix of rock, disco, and electronica. you may not have sold me yet, but this is a fantastic start. and yes, if there is a superlatives at the end of the year, i would imagine that this wins as "most likely to appear in an issue of nylon."

john ringhofer is half handed cloud, definately one of my favorite things to ever come out of berkely ever. i like how he encrypts his faith into songs so bluntly. most of his songs (these can all be found at his asthmatic kitty page) feel more like sketches (most clock in under two minutes) than full compositions, buttttt that'd be completely unfair. for instance, this first song deals with the forshadowing of God sacrificing Jesus in the story of Abraham. hefty stuff in what, 6 lines?

i rememebr in sixth grade thinking about how i would bond with with older folks over the awesome music of daft punk. yeah, it seems dumb now, but thats just the way i thought i guess. when discovery came out, man was that a big deal for me, LIKE HUGE DEAL. it was my first foray into the not made by humans, and first legitimately good foray into modern music. now, i must admit the track face to face got by me for a while, that may have something to do with how its near the end of the record and more vocally based than the rest of the record. in any case, here's a pretty great remix of it by night drugs, i can only assume that this is the majority of the drugs out there. though i may be wrong.

excepting when blaine starts humping wildly on the dancefloor (classy not trashy friend), i like to think that we here at the pyroglyphics headquarters are pretty good about keeping our technosexuality (yep, you guessed it, that means absolutely nothing) to ourselves and we're proud of that. so it is with that little intro that i must break from that to discuss this next track. well, hold up, this track is by frightened rabbit, a scottish band. and the remix is by dj die young, a fantastic young dj out of beantown (thats boston for the uninitiated) here's the songs, but i'm gonna write something after it, so please keep on, i hope its decent enough to keep you reading.

i don't know how to start this really, at what point can i put myself out there honestly and give myself the privacy i feel i deserve? without asking rhetorical questions over and over again. i guess before you read listen to the song, and give these here lyrics a good read. i will now attempt to answer the question, why do i feel bad for this guy? not pity, but genuinely empathize with him.

living in north carolina my whole adolescence i never really got a sense that anyone really cared about their virginity, its not like a modern day roman orgy or anything, but really, who waited? very few. why did they wait? the reasons varied from person to person much the same way that they varied among people who did have sex. funny thing is the excuses were ultimately the same: one friend of mine said to me "i'm just waiting for the right guy" then later, "i found the right guy and i'm happy with my decision" and most recently "he was such a tool." moving to mississippi i have found that the reasons kind of begin to narrow, but so does the discussion. people just don't talk about their sex lives in mississippi, i could assume that this is because in this culture it is more "taboo" to talk about, or simply that every conception in the state is immaculate. but i know this isn't the case.

what does this have to do with the song above, well in a way very little, in a way a lot. does the act of sex between two people really have anything to do with society? no, the singer doesn't even care that the girl knows his name. for him its all about the act, the contact. with a little religion thrown in there however, it becomes a much bigger deal, love and responsibility become the name of the game. the thought of sex as something to be desperate for is repulsive. i mean, lets not even get ahead of ourselves, there's desperation, and then there's just being horny, we really don't even know about that much. one could even argue that marriage is a trivial process, beverly hayman-polen would beg to differ and say marriage is a big deal to the two up there.

i think the biggest thing for me is simply that we need. at some point we all get driven into needing the things we want, or simply don't have. i like to think of it like how when i was a kid, i would need a toy, namely some probably badass batman toy accessories galore. did i have to have the toy? no. but as a kid, dammit i wanted it, i wanted it so bad that mentally, i just had to have it. in my limited capacity i associated the toy with love and affection, wrongly i would later come to appreciate. but i tricked myself into needing that thing i prolly would have been better without anyway. i think we as humans do that, and we know whats its like to want what we can't have, and in the end, need it. so i guess i don't associate really with his need for sex, but its just what happens when we idolize our "primal desires."

first up is a song that is really badass, like, so badass it is like, the anthem of the badass states of america. thunderstruck. well, at the very least it is the national anthem of college football and the lovable fans of said nation. well this is the tittworth remix, meaning its an even more extremely testosteroned version but i'll be damned if it ain't fun and i'll be honest, its fun as hell, so lets just enjoy it alright?

hey, me and blaine seem to have this thing for cute girls who sing a cute note. this tradition continues with hop along queen ansleis. i think the most strinking thing about her harsh, cute, nasaly throaty voice that does just so many things right it just jumps out at you and grabs hold. next thing you notice is the nice ensemble that lets the vocals fly while accompanying it oh so nicely. next you might notice the fantastic lyrics, AND OH MAN ARE THEY FANTASTIC. they have rythm and fantastic cadence, and are not at all relient on the emotion of a full stringed orchestra to get across a really intense emotion. i love it!

i guess if i had to describe the lyrics of hop along queen ansleis, it'd be something of a mix between a five year old girl, an african tribe or two, and walt whitman. i haven't been this impressed by lyrics in rock since born ruffians (not that long ago, but i regard them as lyricists in a class of their own)

So if you haven't noticed, Passion Pit has been LIGHTING UP the music scene since

September '08 and haven't disappointed yet. With their newly released second album Manners, they have become quiet known for their golden single "Sleepy Head." To this I say, the music reviewers are gettin' it RIGHT with following their musical taste buds. With that said,

I have a small treat for you guys which involves a quite talented group by the name

of Run Toto Run covering "Sleepy Head" by yes, Passion Pit. In my opinion, they do a

phenomenal job of instrumentally and vocally revamping the OH so popular track.

Within the video, I also can't complain about the skillful use of animal masks

whilst playing a guitar and violin. So enjoy young lads/ladies...

Not quite the rainbow we're all familiar with consuming or the infamous Reading sort that taught us all how to pick wisely between good books from bad [with the help of Star Trek star LeVar Burton.] Some may refer to Black Moth Super Rainbow as Ramshackle electro-psych, but I say "What?" and simply refer to them as one of the undeniably pleasing [perfect for summer] sounds you will hopefully come across in your near future. Their secret was unveiled by the music world in 2007, when lead singer Tom Fec [a.k.a. Tobacco] and a few woodland creatures released their first ep Dandelion Gum. With their 60s infused electro sound, it was almost impossible for their music to get "stale" for the ears. While their music seems to fit the summer time mood a bit better, I have found most of their tracks to fit quite nicely on mixes in the frigid winter months as well.

As for Tobacco rowing solo, in October '08 he decided to conjure a darker yet similar sound [alongside the still existent BMSR] and released his first solo album Fucked Up Friends. The album starts with "Street Trash" and wastes no time picking up the tempo. The track list is finished off nicely with "Grease Wizard" which sounds much like if Middle Eastern meditation music had a baby with '70s American Funk and it was the most radiant baby alive. All in all, I would say Black Moth Super Rainbow has successfully strayed from the conventional "retro" sound and crafted their own definition of the overused genre title into something original.

Guest Live Review: Passion Pit

So, Passion Pit, you guys! They are the New Hot Thing, as declared by me, celebrity guest blogger Sean. As I live in Austin and had more than ten dollars, I was granted unprecedented access to their June 3rd show at Emo's with fellow east-coast liberal elite pals Harlem Shakes and Cale Parks.

Although my bike FELL APART half a mile from the venue, my immediate declaration of jihad against the scourge of machinery proved somewhat hasty. Opening act Cale Parks, which is either a stage name or his mother writes fantasy books, was a one man bionic band. His act consisted of bass-heavy tunes supplemented with some vigorous drumming, incoherent wailing and plenty of tweaks to his vast array of godless music machines. An all around impressive display, really, although the only big response he got from the crowd was when he commanded his bass machines to say thump thump.

Next up was Harlem Shakes, who I was disappointed to find out is not a jaunty jazz troupe nor a traveling malt shop. Still, the [roughly] 80-strong collective included amongst their midst a giant saxophone, to which I responded "yes." It's no malt shop, but whatever, you delight me already, Harlem Shakes. The disingenuously whites-only group played nearly a full album's worth of material, which in my professional opinion had some truly standout hits along with a few lazier fillers. Sadly the giant sax did not play a big role, despite my dismayed howls at his withdrawal. Also of note, their lead singer sounds frighteningly similar to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's Alec Ounsworth, so perhaps they share whatever the genetic mutation it is that causes eerie nasally howling.
Being the famous music critic that I am, I will label Harlem Shakes as "promising."

As good as the Shakes was, the crowd's most religiously fervent display was saved for the Passion of the Pit (sorry, everyone).The people came to dance, or at least in my case bounce around enthusiastically. This was a condition only the headliners (or again in my case, several High-Lifes) could induce, and lovelorn frontman Michael Angelakos was quick to administer the goods. Angelakos' strange falsetto is somehow not annoying on their very stellar full length debut, and he pulls it off well onstage. Everything sounds as it should be, only more racous, more euphoric, and more awesome. Nonstop hooks and pumping synths are not the way to calm down a drunken crowd. In fact they do the opposite of that. By the time the band had finished with an encore of The Reeling, the crowd seemed ready and capable of charging the Gates of Mordor.
I used the momentary confusion to rush to the head of the t-shirt line, because I like to show people how awesome I am without speaking to them.

Anyways, the two miles spent dragging my bike home was well worth it.

alright, NITE 2, y'all ready for this? last night we looked at some of the new faces in rap, now we look at the rest and that includes kid sister, wale and the cool kids (yeah, tonight is gonna be HUGE)

first is kid sister, this girl out of chicago got her start working with part the duo flosstradamus (she is one of the dudes sister) live and eventually became one of kanye west's proteges. i can't get over this bassline for pronails that rusko did, so hard hitting.

next up is wale, who is popping up everywhere ever since he did W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. with justice and found himself on the cover of URB. he's not only one of the hottest up and coming emcee's, he's also one of the most skilled so give this guy a real serious listen (ha, sorry, the other guys are good, but this guy is tiger woods good.)

finally is the cool kids, comprised of mikey rocks and chuck inglish and boy are they SICK. their committment is most easily evidenced by the perfection of their beats and whatnot. including that sick guitar part in this track.

kid cudi is blowing up. like BOOM stuff. i won't be a jerk and tell you will has been playing it for nearly two years now, but he has been and i just told you. this song was pretty cool, but then the crookers remix got released and ever since then it has pretty much blown up. unfortunately most hits radio station dj's (read: scum of the earth) don't give crookers any credit (rap radio stations usually play the original, no harm there) and so no one knows that the song is freely available (for now, here). all of these versions are sick, but the rusko remix is so new its street cred in an mp3. however, the get the day n nite started is mashup heaven.

sorry about the layover. had a wedding to attend then i got really sick, but it was a swell, unexpected time. got to say hey to so many old friends, and i danced danced danced the night away. next morning it wasn't very pretty but you know, it rarely is (tell my throat and runny nose its no big deal and they might kill you, but that being said).

anyway, here comes the best dance since the macarena, sorta, maybe not, but its a lot of fun, its called the salmon dance by the chemical brothers. its simple and stupid enough, and in the america we live in, sure to maybe catch on. i love the simple falling line and simple simple bassline. lets be honest, a good dance only comes along every once in a while. so please jump on this. or if you're offended by some foul language (its fleeting at worst)

alright, i'm re-ripping all the stuff nathan gave me since i accidentally gave it all to graham instead of copied it. so i promise you guys will all see it up over the weekend while i'm gone back to alabama then mississippi for a day or two (hit me up if you wanna hang for a little bit, i'll try hard to make us all happy).

so i thought i'd collect some of my own personal favorite rarities and overall faves. starting out with a song actually done for NPR about the Lord God Bird, a bird thought to be extinct since the forties reappeared in tiny brinkley arkansas. the original aired features interviews with locals and they talk about how the bird has transformed the humble, poor town. Sufjan listened to the interviews and composed the song. the interview can be heard here and is incredibly well done and very interesting.

next up is his rendition of the star spangled banner which he never played again after getting booed while playing it in new york. he really never plays what he considers protest songs anymore, except all good naysayers, but that was an album track so, yeah you know.

i love this track. i think its my favorite track of his and i really feel like it gets forgotten unfairly in the grand scheme of his music. its sparse, it composition in flawless, it moves, it is in many ways his most adventuresome song and there's just so much going on i don't see how it continues to be pushed aside. its simply not fair.

finally, is this duo of tracks from sufjans christmas records, they're fantastic, and wildly different. come thou fount of every blessing has the feeling of a campfire sing-a-long, but the best sing-a-long ever, there's so much spirit you can't help but love it. next is the now seemingly inappropriate sister winter, its a prime example of his other worldly falsetto and his emotional delivery that really does seem awesome opossum.

so, when you think of santa fe, new mexico, i assume the only thing you really think of is funky patterns and salsa, but do you think of music? maybe you do.... but do you think of french style gypsy music? hah! bet not. enter beirut, AKA zach condon. his compositional skills are WHOA and the emotion coneveyed is on a whole nother level. check out how he gives the players their space and they deliver matching his emotion. the first two of these songs were recorded in oaxaca, oaxaca, mexico with a local 19 peice horn band. and wow is it awesome. the final is a little goodie from the dark was the neight EP.

alright, when you hear this it probably won't be much of a surprise, but this stuff was brought into my life by the maddecent blog. of course its that sweet favela or baile funk you hear so little about out of rio de janiero by way of europe. it actually happened as part of the phenomenon where brazilian dj's would pick up vinyls in miami when they played shows in the states, and brought back the miami bass sound to brazil and a whole new genre was born.

for once, the files are small, so make sure and snag these quick and stuff. they're part of a live set by montage and are REALLY REALLY GOOD.

so, there aren't many songs out there that everyone knows so well yet so few actually know what it means. well, no diggity means for sure, no doubt. yeah, thats simple enough. bag it up? yeah, well that means wear a rubber, assumedly to protect yourself and everyone else.

now that we got that out of the way, this track is nighttime barbecue heat. just grill up some burgers and hotdogs, but serve some straight love. its soo low key and full of smooth swag. further proof that soulja boy just doesn't get it. I love all the tracks here. the original OF COURSE. but don't the vocals just add to the smoothness, not to mention the guitar. thats not even mentioning the piano sample and synth that just set it over the top. then there's the soulwax mash-up, with that ubiquitous old school beat, its pure sitting on the lawn fun y'all. finally the girl talk track that starts out a big unsafe for work, but melts into a truly stellar mash-up between no diggity and flashing lights, the best beat in a while for real y'all.

when i first dj'd at lazy pixel, i started a half an hour early, and went til ten. now this is usually the early chill set, but i guess i didn't get the memo. i played basically what i wanted to but electro and assumed that was chill enough. i'm sitting here mixing rye rye with crystal castles into crookers, and will howard basically stops me. i was actually kinda scared, will can get kinda intense when he gets unsatisfied with something - he's a perfectionist. i scramble to find something that fits. i just kinda remember having this track somewhere, and i knew it was friendly fires. and i justy played it, and even though i was basically alone in a bar with a beer in my hand, i figured it all out. Friendly Fires defined that first hour for me through to this day.

the first track is the a fantastic remix of paris with au revoir simone. its long but it deserves to be, its like a dream in and of its self and i swear once i just thought i floated around the dance floor, its crazy. the vocals here, WOW. the production, WOW. the sham, WOW.

i love this song, it might just be the cheeriest thing to have ever been sung by swedes, which is saying something. i love how the band members (at this point there were 29!) just appear out of nowhere and make it a big huge sing along.

i remember in tenth grade when my friend graham used this song in his credits for his flash project on don quixote. before then i could take or leave this song, but its a wicked fun and furious cover of such a smooth song. nearly raunchy bassline, man i love that bassline.

honestly, i can't think of a song that has a more perfect chorus to is, its really the perfect summer song, with the perfect summer time escapist story behind it. the song is actually based on an elderly couple from salado texas simply driving away instead of going to a nearby famiy reunion. they never got there, but we instead found in arkansas some days later at the bottom of a canyon. sad, but really kinda really cool don't you think?

this might be the happiest song i've ever thought was happy but was actually kinda sad. it is to be played at my funeral, and i love how the first line is an ode to another summertime classic. enjoy!

so, i know you guys know all kinds of stuff about rap music and indie music, but lets be honest there isn't much of an intersection. its not everyday that r. kelly teams up with a bunch of crazy habs to create wonderful music, or that some new york disco dj's feel the miami heat and go really fast.

but wouldn't that be a wonderful world to live it? I sure do think so! enter, the hood internet, two dudes from chicago, ABX and DJSTVSLV, who set the mash-up world on fire with their unique blend of fun and pretension that just lets the skinny jeaned kids dance their nights away. Within the group, ABX is the more epic mixer really working on the mood and sometimes even makes a whole new emotion come out of the same two songs. STV SLV on the other hand is much more about making you doubt your musical existance by doing some ridiculous stuff with songs that don't even sound like could possibly go together.

honestly, i've been wanting to write much more than i've had the time to, but i've been biding my time on this one. so i guess i'll start off with just a couple musings on the stellar new record Merriweather Post Pavilion. Its just about perfect. And thats all i can say. so here we will go into the meat of the post. my girls remixes.

well, i take that back, enjoy the original video first!

okay, no more playing. first off, i'd like to just give a nod to my two personal faves. first is the mexicans with guns RMX. why this one? (for the record, i had originally spoke of this because i think this is the only remix that manages to keep the feel of the original while successfully changing the genre. its also the remix that lets the vocals take the lead in the middle range (perhaps take the lead is inappropriate, the vocals kind of haunt the song, staying the center, but not really at the expense of any other track), while overhauling the bassline and ratcheting up the tempo. its really fantastic, and i think is quietly the best of the remixes.

Animal Collective - My Girls (Mexican's With Guns RMX)

Next up here is a close second, the Gigamesh Proper House Remix. listen and be awed at how they change the song, and the results not be at all calamitous. they play with with chord structure, and it makes the songs both airy and happy, they also stop the song again after AC kinda does it, and it works out beautifully. adding in a pretty fantastic line that works wonders with the original.

Animal Collective - My Girls (Gigamesh Proper House Remix)

Next up is the very same tune that seems to have set the AC world on fire, and if you decide to take the advice of the majority over my own, i wouldn't blame you one little bit. i do like how they brought out the hat sample and made up their own postal service-esque rhythm below it.

Hey kids, Blaine here. Incase you've been living in a trash can for the past week, you might not know that Dan Deacon and Carpark Records were gracious enough to drop Dan Deacon's new album Bromst into stores everywhere yesterday. If you don't know who the hell he is, it is safe to define this man as one of the current figureheads of music in the greater Baltimore, MD area. After releasing his first commercially known album Spiderman of the Rings, Dan Deacon blewww the minds of college kids and [mustache fancied] hipsters everywhere. With Deacon's high energy/electronic sound, it is almost impossible to not be sucked into his world and wonder, "Why the hell do I like this sooo much?" I assure you, it's not because of the 32 oz. of alcohol you just injested. It is simply due to the fact that this hipster is no cliche hipster at all, but in fact a man who graduated with a degree in Sound Engineering and knows much about which melodies sooth the ears and which melodies make you want to unload that 32 oz. you killed. [This knowledge coming from a fairly obese/balding/Steve Urkel spectacles wearing man.]

I would say Bromst is promising to be highly recognized for the time it took to be produced and the layering that went into it as well. There are so many new [analog] instruments included on this album, such as glockenspiel, marimba, and live drums. Deacon plans to tour with a 15 man band, as well as other guests along the way, this year and will continue to cast his dancing spell across the entire North American region. When asked the reason for naming the album Bromst, Deacon answered "It's like when a dragon wakes up and it's not horny but it knows it could easily become horny."

On a side note: In an interview, Dan Deacon also admitted to plans of hosting a dance party in an electric powered cave outside of Austin, TX sometime later this year.

most birds shit on things, this bird drops bombs no lie. belonging to the dub genre he hails from austin TX but has the feel of a DJ from london who loves philly cheesesteaks (some of you might follow that). anyway, listen to these basslines that keep it heavy all the while giving you the option of going with a more disco sound. i was actually so graced as to hear him play first at the DIM MAK showcase and i must say, live he is equally as impressive, jumpin genres with little abandon and immense skill. in a night full of surprises (including a riot and steve aoki's disappointing taste in women) this dude still sticks out to me thanks to his ability to get people moving fast and early. notice his ability to let all of the parts maintain their space while throwing in numerous elements and never let those elements overpower each other.

I do say, its hard to feel sick when people are being so supportive of you! thanks to everyone for showing up, I think that was about as crippled as we've ever been, and hopefully it won't happen again, but it did go so well. I would also like to publicly thank Nels Long who despite knowing me for a very short time has thrown himself behind PYROglyphics in an awesome awesome awesome way. DUDE ROCKS. So, there are lots of guys out there who remix, some of them have a really great sound, and some of them know how to get people movin, we know those guys. But Laidback Luke is special since he can get people from Manila (where he's from), to the Netherlands on the the dancefloor. He has numerous styles (that he is completely comfortable in) and always manages to make his song distinct. Just check out these wildly inventive remixes and a collaboration and see how he makes himself with some of the biggest names in the game and some of the most popular songs in recent memory. And notice how none of there songs sound similar AT ALL, impressive his range for real.

I don't know a whole lot about the wonderful Le Le, I gather that whoever it is, they are French, and they (I think three) are are good friends with the artist Parra who did all the wonderful things you see above you. many of you may remember him for the honestly chauvenistic, yet oddly gentle Breakfast, which also has one of the more fun videos I've seen in recent memory (if drawn nudity involving vaguely human shapes is a problem for you, don't watch it).

On first glance its not too comparable to Breakfast, on the second, they are pretty similar. ehey, girl talk was pretty rad, but you know, it was oxford, being typical dumb oxford. there are some cool people to be sure, but i certainly didn't see many of them tonight. one girl came up to me butt first while i was on stage. at least let me look you in the eye before you violate me. that is ALL I ASK. poor olivia had a tough time with the douchebags that surrounded her, but the dudes there were willing to fight for her (NOT THAT SHE COULDN'T HAVE BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF HIM HERSELF). and nearly did at some point.

oh, a general fashion tip i will give in the style of the amazing hipsterrunoff: "tie-die ain't alt, yall"

i can't help but feel like this song so perfectly encapsulates that stomach wrenching town. (for the record, this is a truly fantastic song that i hope you listen to ad nauseum, i sure have). it's like kanye's gold digger for dudes dealing with upper middle class girls who have no idea that they'll be ugly in a few years.

today is a big day for PYROglyphics, we're headin to Oxford, Mississippi to see the ubiquitous Greg Gillis, a.k.a. Girl Talk. Some may point out that Oxford is a town containing the mississippi of university, a place we're not supposed to like, but it is a town that has already been conquered by the Hooded Deer (conquered their ears), Beverly Hayman (conquered the dudes), and myself (Trey, who conquered the ladies), oh, and no fluids were transferred.

anyway, if this song isn't the opener, i wouldn't want to be the person behind me. clearly the best opener of his three records.

In other news, today is Africa day on the blog! WOOOOOOO.

First up is a group that is sort of a New Pornographers (supergroup) meets The Mars Volta (psych) that happened in Zambia instead of Canada or El Paso. Instead of taking a song that sounds at all like another song by the band, I chose this one that just begs you to enjoy a beer, or sweet tea, or green tea, or a cigar even. (I'm not sure of who I got this from, or where even, but thank you)

Next up is an act I will admit I know nothing about, Franco et le T.P.O.K. Jazz. This is a track that is on the one hand a BEAST at 9 and a half minutes, but on the other, dynamic and wildly inventive.

Finally, this is a track given to me by Will Bryant. It's short, intricate, and probably not in english. I think this is a song that is made by soft bongos and an everpresent, yet delicate bassline. Just listen to how they let what they are doing speak for itself, no musical ego, no oddly biased mixing, really odd to hear with american ears.

Earlier today there was a blog about a radio show that happens weekly on Wednesday nights, but I picked the wrong Wednesday night to make a big deal about it, oh well. Instead there will be a pretty straightforward entry about what we here best: getting dance music on the brain.

First up is a remix from an extraterrestrial duo of dj's who have just arrived on earth (their name suggests on a shuttle, but their impact implies an asteroid) for the second time (they had a brief flirtation with fame in 07 but then apparently died or whatever). This track features a gaggle-o-stars including Spank Rock, M.I.A., Santogold and Nick Zinner. At the real center of this is a riff by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Zinner, with innuendo from your favorite rappers who deal in innuendo over the top, and finally a catchy (if not a tad repetitive) chorus from MIA and Santogold. Look for their full length, The Spirit of Apollo, to drop on February 27th.

Next up, is a Matt & Kim song remixed by one of our favorite dudes Million $ Mano. I will admit that it starts off with a particular synth line that nearly berates your brain to a lull, but it immediately wakes you back up and kicks into a chill baltimore bounce over the chorus to it's a fact. Then comes in a pretty tight (in flow, not in general) rap from Hollywood Holt that augments the relaxed feel while giving it context. Great stuff here!

It would be irresponsible of me not to tell you that Karl Christopher Kuehn is a kid I (Trey) have known for many years and shared many a good time with. We played on the same soccer team, eat at the same quizno's, and get hot at the same hut. CHECK OUT THE KITTIE TAT!

Karl Kuehn can run really fast and write songs with a surprising mix of angst, humor, genuine emotion, ingenuity, and pop sensibility. On the one hand this is impressive, on the other hand I could be discussing the newest output from some dumb mall punk band or paramore for all you know; Karl Kuehn's music (released under the necessarily different K. Kuehn monaker) is (always) acoustic, (sometimes, generally) fast, (sometimes) loud, sometimes out of tune and catchy. In fact, I challenge you to get some of these lyrics and sentiments out of your head. They'll be stuck for days.

First up is my personal favorite, Fuck Shit Up. An ode to a best friend, the kind of friend that is like you but completely different, it isn't really much of an ode, but it is awesome.

Next is a song about a short story about a song. look up joyce carol oates to get where he's going with this. its tender and gentle and i think about murder.

Modern & Awkward

Last of this selection is a song about a girl. A pretty rad girl but I won't embarrass her. She in fact got her hair cut in a particular way for him. I honestly can't decide if this is a morning song, or a night song.

So, in honor of the super bowl, we decided to have one song that was at least mildly football themed, its good though, we promise.

The Go! Team - Huddle Formation

if you have been under a rock recently, go outside, get a tan, then come back and get a load of this sweet track by c.i.t.y. that mixes music sounds better with you and we are your friends in a way that exceeds your expectations and if given a bit of time, will give you a pop tart, TOASTED. or FROZEN. the result of this combination is a song that you can get crunk on mojitos in a miami french cafe to. it also synthesizes two kinda old songs to make something undeniably modern, its like meeting old friends you used to play smash brothers with.

Justice vs. Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You / We Are Your Friends (C.I.T.Y. Remix)

OMG y'all, the world is going buck(zachary)wylde over merriweather post pavillion. yeah, its prolly gonna be one of the better records of the year and all, but is that enough? nope, not nowadays. is this a good thing? generally not, but hey, sometimes you get a gem like this one, i won't go into detail except to say that its about as good as something so straightforward can be.

Animal Collective - My Girls (Mexicans With Guns Remix)

Finally, here a mash-up that exceeds expectations all over the world (i assume) (however it is a bit odd that things people go crazy for the world over never really make it to the more rural parts of the world, huh?) it is a mix of two of the better songs over the last few years, Zdarlight and Bucky Done Gun. it is also odd that this song combines two of the more ironically commercial acts over this time. man, MIA's anti-capitalism is sooooooo obvious. her clothes are super cheap....

i think it should be rather well known amongst friends that i am a giant jens (yens) lekman fan. he is funny, sincere, and a master at crafting catchy melodies. but instead of giving you an original tune, i'll give you a tune you've likely heard whether you remember it or not. but it's also a song he schmaltzes the crap out of with nearly nasaly croons and impossibly dry delivery.

here's a mississippi dude writing a song for a sally from brooklyn. well, its really about his inadequacies in getting bodies moving. its really an art no one has perfected. but dent may is well on his way towards perfecting the art of making living in a double wide awesome (apparently he may have moved out of said double wide) and songwriting (in fact, this is pretty clearly the theme of this entry, KICKASS LYRICISTS). Definately check out his forthcoming album released this tuesday. furthermore, thanks to nathan bedsole for mentally birthing this whole entry earlier this morning. we will be linking to his radio show soon enough when it makes more sense timewise.

This is the final, and definately oddest song on this entry. it's a cover of man on the moon by REM by shout out louds. it doesn't really sound like either REM or shout out louds, but really a cape cod kwassa kwassa remix of something. with that in mind this is an oddly satisfying cover. good stuff.
